A Guide to Caring for Common House Geckos as Pets

mediterranean house gecko

Within its native European range, these geckos are "a protected faunal species" under Appendix III of the Bern Convention. Prtoctions are limited to them inhabiting already-protected places. Regular veterinary check-ups and preventive care are vital to ensure the health and wellness of Mediterranean House Geckos. By addressing any health issues promptly and providing a clean and enriched environment, their lifespan can be maximized. Additionally, it is essential to monitor the behavior of the geckos closely. If any signs of aggression or stress are observed, it is advisable to separate them immediately to prevent injuries.

Humidity

Proper handling techniques can greatly contribute to the well-being and happiness of your Mediterranean House Gecko. By following a few simple guidelines, you can ensure a positive interaction experience for both you and your gecko. Some other signs of the sickness include gecko drooping its head or mouth, visible lumps or swelling, loss of appetite, or discharge from mouth or nose. If you observe these signs in your gecko, you should get your gecko examined. During this time, otherwise known as molting, the skin of your beloved gecko can become dull, and the areas above the eyelid may burst.

You’re likely to find Western Banded Geckos around rocks or debris, which they use for cover when they are above ground. May be confused with the Indo-Pacific Gecko, Hemidactylus garnotii, although the Mediterranean gecko has bumpy skin while the Indo-Pacific gecko has smooth skin. Although they have adhesive toes that help them cling to walls and rocks whilst maintaining even an upside down position, the adhesive pads don't extend to the end of the toes.

Species

This courtship behavior allows the male to demonstrate his fitness and suitability as a mate. The Mediterranean House Gecko employs various hunting techniques to capture its prey. One of the most prominent hunting techniques used by these geckos is their ability to stalk and ambush their prey. With their excellent eyesight and agility, they patiently wait for an unsuspecting insect to come within striking range before pouncing on it with lightning speed. When it comes to behavior and adaptations, the full grown Mediterranean House Gecko possesses some fascinating traits that make it a unique and interesting creature. Let’s delve into the nocturnal activity, climbing abilities, and tail autotomy of this gecko.

The species in this genus are commonly referred to as House Geckos because they take advantage of human habitation and will often enter people’s homes in search of shelter and food. These lizards can be referred to by a couple of other common names including the Turkish Gecko and the Moon Lizard, as they are active at night. The ReptiFiles Mediterranean House Gecko Care Sheet is a simplified care summary, not a full ReptiFiles care guide. I strongly encourage readers to do their own research from high-quality, reputable sources outside of just this care sheet as part of preparing for your new pet reptile.

Male Mediterranean House Geckos initiate the mating process by displaying various courtship behaviors to attract females. These behaviors include head bobbing, tail wagging, and vocalizations. The male gecko will often approach the female and attempt to grasp her with his mouth. This behavior, known as “nipping,” is a way for the male to assert dominance and initiate mating.

Barefoot Geckos in California prefer flatlands and canyons with plenty of rock outcrops and boulders.

This reptile possesses the remarkable ability to change its color to match its surroundings, a skill known as camouflage. This adaptive trait helps the gecko blend seamlessly into its environment, making it less visible to potential predators. They are a relatively small species of lizard that has a snout to vent length of 5-6cm.

It is important to offer a variety of insect prey to ensure a balanced diet for your gecko. By providing a diverse range of insects, you can mimic their natural feeding habits and ensure they receive all the essential nutrients they need to thrive. Some of the most common health concerns in Mediterranean house geckos are discussed below. Mediterranean House Geckos are insectivorous creatures, meaning they primarilyfeed on insects. In their natural habitat, they consume a variety of small insects such as crickets, roaches, and moths.

As urbanization continues to expand, natural habitats are being destroyed or fragmented, limiting the available space for these geckos to thrive. Destruction of natural vegetation, deforestation, and the conversion of land for development projects all contribute to the loss of suitable habitats for the geckos. Additionally, the presence of geckos in human dwellings can sometimes lead to conflicts. Some individuals may find their presence undesirable due to concerns about hygiene or fear of reptiles. In such cases, measures can be taken to prevent geckos from entering homes, such as sealing cracks and crevices, using screens on windows, and eliminating potential food sources. Once the eggs are laid, the female will not provide any further parental care.

Reptile carpet can be used as a substrate, but will need to be changed frequently because it can harbor bacteria. They are hardy so can live in tropical and subtropical environments from the Mediterranean all the way east to India. Metabolic bone disease can cause curved limbs, instability and difficulty standing.

Common house geckos are from a humid subtropical climate, therefore, do your best to mimic this in their enclosures. Try to maintain a daytime temperature gradient of 75 to 90 F with a nighttime low of 65 to 75 F. Heat can be provided by utilizing ceramic heating elements or reptile bulbs in a reflector fixture. A heat mat may also be useful for supplemental heat, but it will not be very useful in heating the ambient air since it is located under the terrarium. Mediterranean house geckos are smaller species of geckos, often called microgeckos. Their bodies are round and cylindrical in shape, with large lidless eyes, bumpy skin, a tapered tail, and sticky toe pads.

By providing a nutritious diet to the insects, you are essentially enhancing the nutritional value of the prey for your gecko. Female Mediterranean geckos can lay multiple clutches each summer. To restore her strength, the female gecko takes a break from breeding for 1 – 2 months. All you can do is make sure that the humidity level of the tank is high enough—lower humidity makes it difficult for geckos to shed their skin.

Yes, but it’s not required for their wellbeing, and requires a proportionately larger enclosure to reduce the risk of fighting and injury. The more room you can provide, the less conflict there is likely to be. Remember, building a bond with your Mediterranean House Gecko takes time and patience.

'Hell of a Cruise' examines being trapped in a superspreader ship

hell of a cruise

Most everyone we knew onboard got sick when we got home....some nearly dying. An anonymous employee reported that many of the cruise ship’s employees couldn’t even talk to the media or else risk losing their job. At its worse, suicides became common on cruise ships. Testimonials against the handling of events included Dr. Arnold Hopland, who was stuck with his wife on the Diamond Princess.

The Icon of the Seas is the Linda Loman of cruise ships, exclaiming that attention must be paid. I am constantly told by my fellow passengers that “everybody here has a story.” Yes, I want to reply, but everybody everywhere has a story. You, the reader of this essay, have a story, and yet you’re not inclined to jump on a cruise ship and, like Duck Necklace, tell your story to others at great pitch and volume. Maybe what they’re saying is that everybody on this ship wants to have a bigger, more coherent, more interesting story than the one they’ve been given. Maybe that’s why there’s so much signage on the doors around me attesting to marriages spent on the sea. Maybe that’s why the Royal Caribbean newsletter slipped under my door tells me that “this isn’t a vacation day spent—it’s bragging rights earned.” Maybe that’s why I’m so lonely.

Movie Info

The first passenger to have died on the ship happened on February 11th. Despite this, the same quarantine measures kept set in place as the disease kept slowly spreading. It was, as self-described by the guests, an experiment of human ‘Petri dishes’ as healthy passengers quite often mixed in close with the sick. There was no real gauge for the safety of their air filtration system. Indeed, the documentary quickly highlights the lack of communication, poor response, and overall, lack of control regarding the spread of this disease. Especially, when taking into consideration actions regarding a cruise ship corporation that valued profits over its passengers’ safety.

The very color of my Suite Sky SeaPass Card, an oceanic blue as opposed to the cloying royal purple of the standard non-Suite passenger, will soon provoke envy and admiration. But as high as my status may be, there are those on board who have much higher status still, and I will soon learn to bow before them. We were on a cruise on the Adventure of the Seas and disembarked in FLL in late February - 23rd or 24th I think. Anyway, when we got to our hotel our son came down with something.

For $75,000, one multifloor suite even comes with its own slide between floors, so that a family may enjoy this particular terror in private. There is a quiet splendor to the Suite Neighborhood. I see fewer stickers and signs and drawings than in my own neighborhood—for example, MIKE AND DIANA PROUDLY SERVED U.S. MARINE CORPS RETIRED. No one here needs to announce their branch of service or rank; they are simply Suites, and this is where they belong. Once again, despite my hard work and perseverance, I have been disallowed from the true American elite. I could not understand English well enough then to catch the nuances of that seafaring program, but I knew that there were differences in the status of the passengers, and that sometimes those differences made them sad.

Of course we were all treated like lepers when we got home...everyone was afraid of us and we didn't even let on that we got sick after we got home. We self quarantined for close to a month when we got home. I just finished watching and it is very damning of the cruise lines. In 2018, Doctor Kadlec was one of the first to testify in congress about our ill-preparedness for the next pandemic.

(This appears to be the actual name of the island.) A comedian at the nightclub opined on what his perfect day at CocoCay would look like—receiving oral sex while learning that his ex-wife had been killed in a car crash (big laughter). But the reality of the island is far less humorous than that. In keeping with the aquatic theme, I attend a show at the AquaDome. To the sound of “Live and Let Die,” a man in a harness gyrates to and fro in the sultry air. I saw something very similar in the back rooms of the famed Berghain club in early-aughts Berlin. Soon another harnessed man is gyrating next to the first.

There is no imposed order, no cogent thought, and, for those who do not harbor a totalitarian sense of gigantomania, no visual mercy. This is the biggest cruise ship ever built, and I have been tasked with witnessing its inaugural voyage. What was not at all mentioned in the movie was that we had over 2000 people on the Coral Princess in South America. We started our journey on March 5th, 2020 and WE didn't get to go home until April 6th.

Anyone in the other country could return home even though borders were closed. In total, the Diamond Princess harbored over 3500 people, with over 700 confirmed cases, and a dozen reported deaths. Yet, by Feb 20th, the Trump administration treated it more as a PR crisis than a potential pandemic. In many ways, foreshadowing all the things that would go wrong. Corporations such as Carnival filed registries under Bermuda to avoid our own laws for taxes and regulations regarding occupational health.

We meet four men, college students, who got a great deal on tickets for the Diamond Princess, a 15-day excursion through South Asia that included multiple stops and a Chinese New Year celebration. News broke that China was enforcing a national lockdown in order to contain Covid outbreaks; the Diamond Princess made its scheduled Hong Kong stop and there, a passenger disembarked and later tested positive. The New Year celebration happened inside the ship instead of on land. The cruise continued to Vietnam, where passengers disembarked for a cave tour, and we see throngs of people crowded together inside the gorgeous natural setting. Maybe the guys shouldn’t have gone on the excursion, but information was sparse and sketchy.

The movie starts well with lots of personal footage taken by passengers documenting their travel. As time goes on and they are stranded longer and longer, trapped inside tiny cabins, with no separation between the sick and not sick, everyone felt like they were just waiting to get sick. The film does well to convey these fears and dangers passengers and employees suffered.

These days, fewer and fewer Americans wear masks in most restaurants and stores. Yet, just this past May, Covid in the US had reached its milestone millionth death, far surpassing the death totals of the AIDS epidemic, and officially, marking Covid as the deadliest event in US history. As a coddled passenger with a suite, I feel like I am starting to understand what it means to have a rank and be constantly reminded of it.

I believe that anyone who works for Royal Caribbean should be entitled to immediate American citizenship. They already speak English better than most of the passengers and, per the Serbian lady’s sales pitch above, better understand what America is as well. Everything from why governments reacted the way they did, to the medical handlings of it, to stories about the doctors, nurses, and public health workers I knew working through the thick of it. Thanks to a movie screening for Hell of a Cruise, courtesy of Peacock, I’ve finally begun writing this story. The first of which will be this piece with much more to come in the upcoming months. It is Monday, September 12th, and I’m in an Uber on my way to the premiere of ‘Hell of a Cruise’. The driver tells me that, as of last week, they’re no longer required to wear masks to drive. The Best Cruises in 2023 to Book Right Now

best time to book a cruise for 2023

During the course of a year, the price of the cruise varied from a low of $299 for a balcony cabin (during October and November) and a high of $539 (Christmas/New Year’s) even though this is the same trip on the same ship. This cruise is aboard Harmony of the Seas on a 7-day cruise departing Galveston. Since the cruise is scheduled regularly for more than a year into the future, we can compare the price of the cruise now with the price of the same cruise at the same time next year. Below, we go into detail on both fronts with some actual data to show you exactly when to time your purchase and when to set sail to save the most money. Certain times of year are preferable than others based on one factor, but another time of year will be more desirable based on another factor.

Best Time of Month to Book a Cruise

When Royal Caribbean releases new sailings, you want to take advantage of good prices, but not paint yourself into a corner either. With the cruise industry shut down and no window of time when they might restart, it seems as though perhaps this rule would not apply any more. If you're catching a plane, when to fly in for your cruise depends on several factors. I always advise flying in at least one day before you're scheduled to embark, just in case you encounter any delays or cancellations.

How do I know if I'm getting a good deal when I book?

The best season to take a cruise in northern Europe weather-wise is in the summer from June through August. If you’re okay with cooler weather and want fewer crowds, opt for a sailing in September or October. The Bermuda cruise season generally runs from late March into early November. For mild weather, cheaper cruise fares, and fewer crowds, try to sail right at the beginning of the season in April or May.

January

Like cruise line newsletters, they will be able to advise you when they are alerted of new itineraries. River cruises take place on smaller ships that travel on rivers, offering a more intimate and immersive experience. If you book early and the sailing goes on sale, you miss out on the savings, conversely, if you wait to book, the airfare may increase and offset potential savings. Then you’ll have to repeat that feat to get the best deal on cruises, with 5 am being the ideal time to get the best deal.

Emerald Cruises’ latest vessel is so boutique and intimate that it’s more accurately described as a yacht. Accommodating just 100 guests, the luxe Emerald Azzurra will debut in 2023 out of a new cruise terminal in Qatar. Itineraries will set out from Doha, on seven-night, eight-day voyages that stop at Sir Bani Yas Island, Abu Dhabi; Khasab, Oman; Fujairah, UAE; Zighy Bay, Oman; and Dubai. Return visitors who still want that big ship experience might try a different category of cruise line. The major operators—Princess, Holland America, Celebrity, are all premium-tier cruise lines, but the luxury cruise lines have also deployed ships to Alaskan waters.

You need to go where the inventory is; if your dream cruise is filling up, the last minute rates will be higher not lower. The bigger issue is there may simply not be a last-minute cruise deal to be had. Cruise ships are sailing full, and people are booking cruises earlier and in more numbers than ever before. Royal Caribbean allows price adjustments with no penalty until final payment date, so if you do notice a price drop when Black Friday rolls around, call Royal Caribbean or your travel agent to get the cruise fare adjustment. For example, Norwegian's Free at Sea promotion currently includes six booking perks (free beverage package, shore excursion credit, specialty dining, Wi-Fi, extra guests and buy-one-get-one-free airfare). Booking a cruise just days before sailing should only be attempted by travelers within an easy drive of the cruise port.

In my opinion, the best time to book a cruise is based on the season

You want to lock in a good rate, secure your favorite cabin and a pick specific ship and itinerary -- especially popular ones that tend to sell quickly, are one-off voyages, or are otherwise in high demand. That may sound like a great reason to wait to book onboard, but waiting to book a cruise until you get on a ship is a mistake. If it's the latter, that's when you get last-minute deals on cruise ships with unsold cabins.

best time to book a cruise for 2023

The voyages bring experts in history and culture on board for lectures and to guide guests through onshore excursions. Next year, the line will be unveiling its second such vessel, Scenic Eclipse II. The new iteration will also come stocked with two helicopters and an onboard submarine that seats eight guests and can submerge up to 650 feet. Expect a personal butler, pillow menu, Egyptian cotton sheets, king-size bed, private veranda, and a mini-bar provisioned to your preferences. Cruisers who are veterans at Inside Passage itineraries on the big ships have really only seen a preview of the nooks and crannies of the region. Prices for cruise fares tend to go up over time, so booking early ensures you get a good price now, and can reprice the cruise later if there is a sale or price drop.

Online Travel Agencies (OTA)

What’s more, most cruise lines offer a free cancellation policy up to 48 hours before sailing for those who booked their place early. Further, the new price protection policies allow tourists to take full advantage of the lower rates if they come up after they’ve booked. This means that customers can book their trip as early as possible and when the price drops, they can request to have their rates lowered as well.

As I said earlier, great sales and deals can pop up year-round, including on other holidays such as Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. Are you guaranteed to find the cheapest, most freebie-laden pricing during these months? Cruise lines sometimes inflate prices before a sale, so deals for 30% or 50% off may not be as good as you think. Or, the cruise line may offer its best fares in a one-off sale at another time of year. If there's no best day to book a cruise for the best deal, you might think there's a best month.

A great feature this cruise interface has is the exclusively dedicated 800 number that connects customers with a cruise expert, ready to help them decide which cruise to book according to their needs, budget, and ideal destination. The best times to buy a cruise are Black Friday, Black Friday Weekend, Cyber Monday, and Wave Season. For more tips on finding cruise deals, be sure to read our 10 Rules for Getting the Best Deal on a Cruise. The good news is that there is no wrong time of year to sail for most cruises, such as those heading to the Caribbean or Bahamas. In other words, if you can sail at the least expensive time, your cruise can be a sharp discount off the peak price.

Knowing the best time to purchase your cruise is just one part of the puzzle. In our experience, there isn’t much difference in the time of year that you book. For example, the same cruise isn’t automatically cheaper if you buy in January versus if you buy in July.

Cruise ships offer a variety of amenities and activities to keep passengers comfortable and entertained during their voyage. Need further encouragement (discouragement) the best day to book is on a Sunday, usually a lie in the day for most people, well not you, well not if you want to secure a cheap cruise that is. There are two key times to book your Cruise vacation to save the most money.

You might find that the Black Friday promotion is nearly the same as other promotions during the year. There isn't necessarily one month that's better than another, but cruise lines love to tie sales to major holidays. Just to confirm this theory, I reached out to a travel agent to get a sense of their experience.

Despite the time allotted, there were a few songs the band didn’t get a chance to rehearse. For me, that music, when I hear those songs, it just totally zaps me to these emotional parts of my life,” he said.

If you kept the window portion of the balcony closed most of the time, it would seem like the balcony portion of the room was part of the regular living space. But, when you are “on the balcony” you aren’t actually outside. It’s more like being in a sunroom with a large picture window.

Terrific New Approach To Main Dining Room

The basic story line is that four chefs (one for each course) are competing to make the best dish, but the fun is in watching each chef create your dish – right before the real version comes out. It really was fun, and the animation is gorgeous and creative. I have been cruising since 2004 and have sailed on dozens of cruises all over the world. Over a 7 or 10-day cruise, I’d love constantly finding new places to relax and read. And I went up to the top deck both mornings to watch the sunrise, but both days the sun was in the same direction relative to the front of the ship. I’d love to be able to see the sunrise (and sunsets) from different spots. The embarkation area on port days was spacious and well organized. While there were often long lines when returning to ship, as expected, the process was extremely quick and efficient.

Additionally, we offer a number of autism-friendly services including priority check-in and boarding. Our cruises offer unforgettable experiences for kids of all ages. With fun games, outdoor activities, video game tournaments, and slumber parties all on the agenda, your kids will have the time of their life during their family vacation on board. By contrast, the Celebrity Edge was low-key luxury; much more the way we like to vacation. The staff was professional – always around when we wanted them, but not in our faces in a fake-cheery manor when we didn’t.

The overall pool deck is quite nice with conveniently located bathrooms that are several steps above the typical pool bathroom and were well maintained. The balcony staterooms on Celebrity Edge have fantastic bathrooms. And, unlike the main cabin, they have lots of useable shelf space.

Alternatively, the paper program, Celebrity Today, is left on your bed or outside your cabin every night. Plus there are the main four restaurants (Tuscan, Cyprus, Normandie and Cosmopolitan). We could have been more adventurous, but when I travel with my kids they get to choose, and buffets are simply easier and more flexible than set seatings.

In addition to that regular schedule, you could arrange for early morning hours on port days where the ship arrived before 9 a.m. Given that ours was a very port-heavy itinerary with long port days that often started at 7 a.m., it was very handy to have this option. The club would open 30 minutes prior to port arrival if the staff was notified at least 24 hours in advance.

Most notably, they are near the pool, but they don’t actually open out into the pool area. You can’t see or access the pool directly from the cabana. So, it’s more of a designated lounge space with perks that you could visit for breaks from the pool. The first thing we noticed when walking into the kids’ club was its size and location. The club resides on one of the lowest levels of the ship – Deck 3, directly beneath the Theater (which can be convenient at pick-up time). The actual physical space for the kids’ club facilities is rather small.

Unveiling the Truth: Dentists' Secrets to Pristine Smiles

Dentists are professionals who are responsible for the oral health of their patients. They provide a range of services, including cleanings, fillings, and extractions. Given their expertise in dental care, it is reasonable to assume that dentists themselves have good teeth.

There are a number of reasons why dentists are likely to have good teeth. First, they are aware of the importance of good oral hygiene and are likely to practice it themselves. They know that brushing and flossing regularly, eating a healthy diet, and avoiding sugary drinks are all important for maintaining good oral health. Second, dentists have access to the latest dental technologies and treatments. This means that they can get the best possible care for their own teeth. Third, dentists are typically motivated to maintain their own oral health because they want to set a good example for their patients.
